| The
Koorie Heritage Trust H.Q building at 21 -45 Lonsdale Street,
Melbourne was to proudly provide a fully indepent home for
education, research and exhihibition for the first time
in its fourteen year existence. The planned transformation
of the interior of the existing building would have provided
high quality support spaces for the trust's activities.
Early in February 1999, three weeks before it was due to
open it's doors, this exciting new home was tragically destroyed
by an arson attack. This was a devastating blow to the Trust
and the large team of committed individuals and organisations, who
had striven for over five years to raise the finance and
plan and build the centre.
After some painful soul searching, the Board of the Trust
decided to leave the ill-fated Lonsdale Street site and
to buy another building in King Street and start all over
again. This requires a courageous regathering of commitment
, vision and will.
